It’s a new year and New Year’s resolutions are in full swing. According to a recent study, 48% of respondents said that improving their fitness was a priority in 2024. The benefits of physical activity are plentiful, and research shows that physical exercise has a positive impact on our mental health as well. Yet sometimes we have no idea where to begin or we lose momentum along the way.
I wrote a post here on how to start a fitness routine and small steps you can take to increase your physical activity. If you’re ready to jump in the workout waters or you need a little retail motivation to stay committed, check out my must have workout items below…
I’ve been running in Brooks running shoes for over ten years, and I love this neutral running shoe. The cushioning is felt without being too overdone, and the soles support the shock of the road. Comfortable and stable: what more could you want?
A full body tone workout is possible with resistance bands. These bands have different resistance levels, so you can modify for your fitness level. My favorite resistance band exercise are lateral walks, clamshells and abductions.
These ankle weights are great because you can remove or add weight as you please. I wear these while I do the resistance band exercises above for double the toning.
These dumbbells are comfortable to hold due to the neoprene coating. Start with the two pound weights for more barre/toning exercises and work your way up to heavier weights (I have these in 2, 5 and 8 pounds).
These are my most favorite socks for workouts. I have ran half-marathons in these socks with zero issues. They keep your feet dry in the rain, cool in the heat and are just amazing.
While you can do workouts with a foam roller, I use mine for recovery almost every single night. Anyone who has used a foam roller knows that they hurt so good. To avoid injury, roll it out. Here are some foam roller exercises you can try. Also tennis balls work wonders for your foot arches.
A yoga mat has so many useful purposes: Yoga, stretching, meditation, napping; I’ve laid my babies on my yoga mat when they were little. This mat has extra cushioning so you will be comfortable on a hardwood surface and there are lots of fun designs to choose from.
Studies show: when mothers are active, so are their kids! This yoga mat for children allows the kids to join in on stretch or workout sessions. My kids love these mats and they come in tons of cute patterns. Get the kids involved early to reinforce an enjoyment for physical activity.
Do What You Can
Physical activity does not have to be complicated. If you have a good pair of sneakers, you’re on your way to a healthier habit. Remember every little bit counts, so do not stress that you don’t have an hour to dedicate to exercise. Just try to move a little more each day, and your body and mind will thank you.
